Hats from the Heart (VIRTUAL PROJECT)

  • Youth Volunteer Corp of Hampton Roads 10 San Jose Drive Newport News, VA, 23606 United States (map)

Want to spread a little hope and warmth over the holidays?

Want to learn how to knit?

Already know how to knit?

During this two part project youth will be making cozy knit hats that will be donated to local nonprofits in order to spread hope, warmth and cheer for the holidays. No experience is required. We have a wonderful guest instructor who will be walking the youth through all the steps needed to successfully knit the hats over the two sessions. Hat making supplies will be provided for the duration of the project for those that secure a spot on the roster.

Required materials: PC, laptop or smartphone with webcam, internet access, hat kit provided by YVCHR.

Youth will need reliable internet access and a webcam in order to participate in the Zoom call. The Zoom link will be provided via email to those who register for the project using the online form.

On December 2nd and 9th, a couple minutes before 5:00 pm, simply click on the project link from a phone, laptop or PC. If you have never used Zoom, it will ask you to download the software. It will take a couple of minutes, so plan accordingly as we will start promptly at 5:00 pm. Youth will need to enable their webcam AND microphone so they can interact during the call. Be sure to test the audio capabilities prior to the project, and consider using headphones to avoid distractions.

During the call on the 2nd, youth will learn how to cast their yarn onto the needles, join their work and begin knitting their hat. Youth will need to continue working on their hat until the final meeting on the 9th at which time they will learn how to finish their work and perhaps start another one.
